Soooooooo guess what group I FINALLY got to shoot? I’ve been fangirling over Rumminov’s Fancy Tiers for awhile, pretty much squeed at Leaux until she agreed to do Karkat, and then… the group kinda exploded and dragged practically every other Homestuck we knew into its gravitational field. :PAnd it was glorious. My secret santa gift for Cliffe~ I was lucky enough to get someone who shares some of my favorite characters and ships, so rather than choose between them I sorta wound up going all out! Cliffe also runs an adorable Journey ask blog, so I took a little inspiration from that for a slight redesign of Jade’s god tier outfit. u wu Happy holidays, and I hope you like it! I definitely enjoyed drawing it~

The weird thing about the fandom is that their impression of characters is so easily flip-flopped that they can go from reverence to pure disdain in no time flat. The obvious example here is Jake, and how his “fall from grace” put him in the h8ers crosshairs. But it also happened with John when he had a bit of a temper tantrum, and the opposite for Jane (who was, for the most part, ignored/disliked until yesterday).
Characters aren’t universally good/bad. You’re definitely entitled to loving them and hating them as you please, but the great (really great! wonderful!) thing about Hussie’s characterization is that he creates personalities, not stereotypes. To me, at least, Jake’s about as realistic as a 16 year-old dude can get. Teenagers are fickle, whiny, jackassy, and hormonal. I know for a fact I (like Jake) dated for the sake of dating when I was in high school, and while it’s a douchey thing to do, it’s definitely something that happens.
It’s kind of disappointing when tumblr/fandoms misinterpret and attack multi-faceted characters because they don’t fit their ideal expectations. It’s exciting when someone acts unexpectedly. It’s hilarious when they embarrass themselves (think: drunk Rose). I really love seeing development, and it’s kinda sucky when you know you’ll get dissed for liking certain characters because of it.
