irritablevowel: Six new dog breeds will be allowed to compete in this year’s Westminster Kennel Club dog show! This includes the Norwegian Lundehund (pictured above), a rather bizarre little hound bred for an interesting job: The Norwegian Lundehund spent centuries on the rocky cliffs and high fields of arctic Norway hunting and retrieving puffin birds for local farmers. This dog has at least six toes on each foot so it can handle the almost vertical areas where puffins nest. More from the AKC, which recognized the breed starting in 2011: The Norwegian Lundehund is a small and agile Spitz breed with several unique characteristics in combination not found in any other dog. Features such as six toes on each foot; prick ears that fold closed, forward or backward at will; and the ability to tip the head backward until it touches the back bone all helped them perform their job as Puffin hunter.  Oh my gosh the feet!
